Dear Inspector

Lise Tanquerelle, a Paris police commissioner, accidentally knocks a moped rider off his bike with her car. The man turns out to be Antoine Lemercier, a Greek professor she knew during her student days, and the chance encounter soon develops into a romance. Lise keeps her job to herself, partly because Antoine has no fond memories of the police.

Her work, meanwhile, pulls her in another direction. Someone is stabbing members of the National Assembly with the same unusual weapon, and Lise leads the investigation even as the relationship takes up more of her time. The inquiry repeatedly points toward Christine Vallier, the young mistress of one of the dead deputies, whose mother worked at the Assembly's refreshment counter.

Philippe de Broca directed this French comedy, which followed his 1973 film The Magnificent One in his filmography. Jean-Paul Rouland and Michel Audiard wrote the screenplay. Annie Girardot plays Lise and Philippe Noiret plays Antoine, with Catherine Alric, Hubert Deschamps, Paulette Dubost and Roger Dumas among the credited cast of thirty-two. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from around 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8 from a much smaller number of votes.
