What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming for the movie took place on the north shore of Massachusetts in Manchester, Beverly, Salem, and Gloucester. The full name of the town of Manchester is Manchester-by-the-Sea, which translates to 'Manchester by the Sea'.
  • Initially, Matt Damon was supposed to play the lead role, having worked with Lonergan on his second film, 'Margaret' (2011).
  • In 2014, the film's script was on the list of the best unrealized projects of the year.
  • Casey Affleck unexpectedly burst into tears during the filming of a scene in the morgue, which surprised everyone. Tears were not written into the script, but director and screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan decided to leave that take in the film.
  • Kenneth Lonergan included one incident involving his own daughter in the storyline. Once, she lost something, he got angry and yelled, and a stranger (a random passerby on the street) casually remarked to him: “You can tell right away – a great father.” Lonergan yelled something back in response. In this film, Lonergan himself played an episodic role as the person making the reproach.
  • A delay until spring with the burial of the deceased sometimes occurs in reality, and it all depends on the cemetery. Most cemeteries dig graves with excavators, but at some cemeteries (older ones) their use is prohibited, and gravediggers have to wait for the ground to thaw before digging graves by hand.
  • The scene following the fire scene was decided to be filmed immediately, and the shooting lasted from midnight to the middle of the next day.
  • The film featured actual members of the Manchester fire department and ambulance service. They also served as consultants and helped the filmmakers correct some inaccuracies regarding their professional actions.
  • Initially, Matt Damon was supposed to play the main role, having previously worked with Lonergan on his second film, "Margaret" (2011).
  • Kenneth Lonergan included one incident involving his own daughter in the storyline. Once she lost something, he got angry and shouted, and a passerby casually remarked to him: "You can tell – a great father." Lonergan yelled something back in response. In this film, Lonergan himself played an episodic role as a man who reproaches.
