Lee Chandler works as a handyman in Boston, living alone and keeping to himself. When his older brother Joe dies, Lee learns that he has been named guardian of Joe's teenage son Patrick. Reluctantly, he returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea, the coastal Massachusetts town where he grew up, to look after the boy and arrange the funeral. Being back in his hometown confronts him with a painful past that drove him away from his wife Randi and from the community he once belonged to.
Kenneth Lonergan directed and wrote the film, his third feature after You Can Count on Me (2000) and Margaret (2011). Casey Affleck plays Lee, with Lucas Hedges as Patrick, Michelle Williams as Randi and Kyle Chandler as Joe. Matt Damon, Chris Moore and Gigi Pritzker produced.
The film was released in November 2016 and runs 138 minutes. Made for about 9 million dollars, it earned roughly 79 million worldwide, a strong return for a drama of its scale. On IMDb it holds 7.8/10 from around 354,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5/10 from about 6,580 votes. A critics' rating of 8.9/10 from 356 reviews places it notably higher than those audience scores.
