The Red Turtle follows a man who is washed up on a remote tropical island, where turtles, crabs and birds are his only company. He manages to build a raft and set out to sea, but a red turtle repeatedly destroys the craft and blocks his escape. When the creature comes ashore, he tries to overpower it, and the encounter sets the course for the rest of his life. The story is told without dialogue and spans the major stages of a human existence.
The film is the feature debut of Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit, who directed and wrote the screenplay, after a career in short animation that included an Academy Award. It was produced by Toshio Suzuki, Vincent Maraval and Pascal Caucheteux, and is a co-production between French and Belgian companies and Japan's Studio Ghibli. The voice cast includes Tom Hudson, Baptiste Goy, Axel Devillers and Barbara Beretta.
It runs eighty-one minutes and was released in 2016. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from roughly forty-two thousand votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from about fourteen hundred, while a critics' rating stands at 8.2 from one hundred and seventy-two reviews, so reviewers rated it more highly than audiences did.
