Short description
Disenchanted continues the story of Giselle, the princess who left the animated kingdom of Andalasia for New York and built a life there with the lawyer Robert Philip. Some years into their marriage, Giselle has grown unhappy with ordinary city life and longs for the fairy-tale existence she left behind. She and Robert move with their family to the suburban town of Monroeville, hoping for a fresh start, but the move brings new difficulties. Giselle feels out of place among the locals, particularly because of the town's dominant social figure, Malvina Monroe, and the life she hoped for does not materialise. Turning to Andalasia's magic for help, she sets off a spell that changes the whole community and puts her family's future at risk, leaving her to undo the damage and work out what a happy ending means for her now.
The film is a sequel to Enchanted and reunites Amy Adams as Giselle, Patrick Dempsey as Robert, and James Marsden as Prince Edward, with Maya Rudolph joining as Malvina Monroe and Gabriella Baldacchino as the grown Morgan. Adam Shankman directed it, placing it tenth among the features he has directed, after What Men Want. Brigitte Hales wrote the screenplay, and the producers include Barry Sonnenfeld, Amy Adams and Barry Josephson.
Disenchanted drew a 5.5/10 critics' rating from 100 reviews, while audiences were more favourable: it holds 6.6/10 on TMDB and 5.6/10 on IMDb, from roughly 1,200 and 30,000 votes respectively.
What's left behind the scenes
- Amy Adams (who played Princess Giselle) is naturally red-haired, but wore a wig for the film. And her voice in some songs was dubbed by actress, director, and producer Laura Dickinson.
- Initially, it was assumed that Jodi Benson would reprise her role as Robert's secretary on screen (as in Kevin Lima's 2007 film that launched the franchise), but the scene with her did not make it into the film.
