Ved and Tara meet while on vacation and feel an immediate connection. To make their romance unconventional, they agree to keep their true identities secret and invent fictional versions of themselves. They eventually leave the island with the intention of never meeting again, but their paths cross years later. This reunion forces Ved to confront the conflict between his social obligations and his true self as he attempts to win Tara back.

Directed and written by Imtiaz Ali, this romantic drama is the third film in a chronological sequence of his work, following Jab We Met and Rockstar. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor as Ved Sahni and Deepika Padukone as Tara Maheshwari, with supporting roles played by Piyush Mishra, Vivek Mushran, Javed Sheikh, and Sushma Seth. It was produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Imtiaz Ali through UTV Motion Pictures, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, and Window Seat Films.
