Matt Fletcher is a buffalo hunter who returns to his home near the Rio Grande with a prized Appaloosa stallion, hoping to settle down and start a horse ranch. A Mexican bandit named Chuy Medina takes the animal from him, and Matt sets out to get it back. Chuy holds power over the area, and Matt endures humiliation and violence from him and his men rather than give up the pursuit. Trini, a woman attached to Chuy, becomes an ally to Matt when he finds the bandit's hideout, and the two are drawn together as the confrontation approaches. The film is a Western set in the 1870s.
Sidney J. Furie directed, working from a screenplay by James Bridges and Roland Kibbee, with Alan Miller producing for Universal Pictures. The film is the third of the thirteen features Furie directed, following The Ipcress File in 1965 and preceding Hit! in 1973. Marlon Brando plays Matt, with Anjanette Comer as Trini and John Saxon as Chuy. Emilio Fernández, Alex Montoya and Miriam Colon appear in supporting roles.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 76 votes, which suggests a modest but durable following rather than wide acclaim. Running 99 minutes, it remains one of several Westerns Brando made during the mid-1960s.
