Set in the chaotic black markets of postwar Japan, Battles Without Honor and Humanity follows Shozo Hirono, a former soldier who is drawn into the underworld after a violent confrontation. He ends up in prison, where he forms a bond with a gangster connected to a powerful syndicate. Once released, Hirono joins a yakuza clan, but the loyalties he has built clash with a shifting criminal landscape in which the old codes of honor carry little weight. Rival gangs jostle for control, and the ties formed in prison help set the stage for a long and bloody struggle in the Hiroshima region, a conflict said to draw on real events. The film is directed by Kinji Fukasaku, the seventh of sixteen features in his filmography by release order, following Battles Without Honor and Humanity: Deadly Fight in Hiroshima and preceding New Battles Without Honor and Humanity 1. Kazuo Kasahara wrote the screenplay, and Bunta Sugawara leads a large credited cast as Hirono, with Hiroki Matsukata, Kunie Tanaka, Eiko Nakamura, Tsunehiko Watase and Goro Ibuki among the principal players. It runs 99 minutes. On IMDb it holds a 7.4 rating from roughly 4,800 votes; on TMDB it stands at 7.3 from about 126 votes.
