Short description
The Descent: Part 2 continues the story of Sarah Carter, who emerges alone and bloodied from a cave system in the Appalachian Mountains. Unable to account for what happened to her five friends, she is disbelieved by the local sheriff and pressured into leading a rescue party back underground. Accompanied by police officers and a team of cave specialists, Sarah descends into the tunnels again, where the group's suspicion of her grows and the creatures dwelling in the dark make any way out uncertain.
Jon Harris directs, moving from his editing work on the 2005 original to take charge of this sequel, working from a screenplay by James Watkins, J Blakeson and James McCarthy. Shauna Macdonald returns as Sarah, with Natalie Mendoza back as Juno Kaplan, and Gavan O'Herlihy, Josh Dallas, Anna Skellern and Saskia Mulder among the supporting cast. The film is a British and French production with a budget of 6 million dollars, and its worldwide gross of roughly 7 million dollars was modest.
On IMDb the film holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 55,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of about 1,400 votes. A critics' score of 5.1 out of 10 from 41 reviews places it below the audience figures, though all three measures cluster in similar territory.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began in May 2008 at Ealing Studios in London. Outdoor scenes were shot in the forests of Surrey, in southern England.
- The film was originally scheduled for release in May 2009, but due to the crisis at the studio, a decision was made to postpone the release date by several months.
- Filming progressed faster than planned.
- Before starting work on the screenplay, J. Blakeyson, James McCarthy, and James Watkins joined a rescue team in Yorkshire.
- In the film, Greg finds a camera with bloodstains. While watching it, he sees six girls from the film “The Descent.” The creators could have used footage already shot from the first film, but instead decided it would be more interesting to invite all the girls to shoot these few scenes.
