Short description
Barbie lives in Barbie Land, a brightly coloured world where everything is arranged for perfection and where the Barbie dolls believe their existence brings happiness to girls in the human world. When Barbie begins to experience doubts and changes she cannot explain, she leaves Barbie Land for the real world, accompanied by Ken. There the two of them encounter a society with different rules from their own, and Mattel's executives try to send Barbie back to where she came from.
Greta Gerwig directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach. It is her third feature as director, following Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women in 2019, and it precedes Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, scheduled for 2027. Margot Robbie plays Barbie and also produced the film with David Heyman and Robbie Brenner. Ryan Gosling plays Ken, with America Ferrera as Gloria, Ariana Greenblatt as Sasha, and Issa Rae and Kate McKinnon among the other Barbie roles. The credited cast runs to 172 people and the crew to 247.
The film was released in July 2023 and runs 114 minutes. Made for about 100 million dollars, it took roughly 1.45 billion dollars worldwide, a return far beyond its production cost. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from about 663,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 out of 10 from around 11,600 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 8 out of 10 from 507 reviews, noticeably higher than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The filmmakers always envisioned only Ryan Gosling as Ken.
- According to Ryan Gosling, he agreed to the role of Ken after seeing his daughter’s Ken doll lying in the dirt next to a gnawed lemon slice. He took a picture of the doll with the lemon slice and sent it to the film’s director, Greta Gerwig, writing that he was willing to play Ken.
- The film uses a font from 1975-1991. The Barbie logo is typically changed every generation.
- The project was announced in 2009, but since then the idea has undergone many changes and has, at one time or another, been owned by three studios. Initially it was a project of Universal Pictures, in 2014 it was bought by Sony Pictures. Jenny Bicks was hired as a screenwriter, but a year later she was replaced in the author's chair by Diablo Cody. In December 2016, negotiations for the lead role began with Amy Schumer, who was also offered to rewrite the script with Kim Caramele. Schumer left the project in 2017 when it was announced that Alethea Jones would direct, Olivia Milch would write the script, and Anne Hathaway would appear on screen in the lead role. In 2018, the project moved to Warner Bros.
