The undersea empire of Mu, believed lost for twelve thousand years, resurfaces and begins a campaign to reclaim the surface world as its own. Strange incidents occur across the globe, including the disappearance of two engineers, while the former Admiral Kosumi narrowly escapes being abducted along with his secretary and goddaughter, Makoto. The photographer Susumu Hatanaka and his assistant Yoshito Nishibe intervene to stop the attempt. The trail leads back to Mu, whose ruler intends to force the surface nations into submission.
At the centre of the resistance is Captain Shinguji, a wartime officer who vanished decades earlier and has been living in seclusion on a hidden island base. There he has built a formidable submarine, the U-2000, with a crew loyal to him, and he initially refuses to lend it to anyone. When agents of Mu seize his daughter, he takes up the fight for personal reasons as well as the fate of the world.
Ishirō Honda directed this thirteenth of his twenty-five films, working from a screenplay by Shinichi Sekizawa and produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka, with Tadao Takashima, Yōko Fujiyama, Yū Fujiki, Kenji Sahara, Ken Uehara and Hiroshi Koizumi among the credited cast of forty-five. On IMDb it holds 5.8 from around 1,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from roughly 58 votes.
