Short description

Fantomas Unleashed continues the story of the masked criminal Fantômas, who resurfaces a year after Commissioner Juve and the journalist Fandor last failed to capture him. This time Fantômas abducts the scientist Professor Marchand, apparently intending to force him to build a weapon of enormous power. Realising that Marchand's assistant, Professor Lefebvre, is likely to be the next target, Fandor disguises himself as Lefebvre to catch the villain. The plan misfires, and Fandor, Juve and Hélène all end up in Fantômas's hands, leaving them to work out how to escape. The film is the second entry in a trilogy, following Fantomas (1964) and preceding Fantomas vs. Scotland Yard (1967), and it is one of several films André Hunebelle directed, among them The Three Musketeers (1953) and Sous le signe de Monte-Cristo (1968).

Jean Marais plays multiple roles, appearing as Fantômas, Fandor, Lefebvre and the Marquis de Rostelli, while Louis de Funès returns as Commissaire Juve and Mylène Demongeot as Hélène. The screenplay was written by Jean Halain and Pierre Foucaud, with Alain Poiré and Paul Cadéac producing. The film runs 105 minutes and blends adventure, comedy, crime and fantasy, with a credited cast of 32.

Audience response has been steady over the long term: on IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from around 9,200 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.7 from roughly 585 votes. These figures suggest a widely seen popular title whose viewers rate it favourably rather than exceptionally.

What's left behind the scenes

  • One of the hotel guests in Italy speaks fluent Russian. Those who have watched non-Russian versions of the film have already noticed this. If there are any doubts, you can follow the actor's articulation while playing this role.
  • The film ranks 29th in attendance among foreign films in Soviet cinema distribution.
  • The 'face' of Professor Lefèvre is a mask of the substitute prison guard from the film 'Fantômas'. Both roles are played by Jean Marais.
  • A Citroën DS was used as Fantômas' flying car in the film.
  • During the filming of the final scene, Louis de Funès, performing the stunt himself, fell from the airplane into rose bushes. The actor spent a week in the hospital.
