The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms

A nuclear test in the Arctic Circle wakes a prehistoric creature that has lain frozen for millions of years. The monster makes its way south along the North American coast and eventually reaches New York City, where it causes widespread destruction. Scientists and military officers try to work out what the creature is and how to stop it before the situation gets worse.

Eugène Lourié directed the film, which was released in June 1953 and runs 80 minutes. It was his first time in the director's chair. He went on to direct Gorgo in 1961. Lou Morheim and Fred Freiberger wrote the screenplay, and Hal E. Chester and Jack Dietz produced it for Jack Dietz Productions. The cast includes Paul Hubschmid, Paula Raymond, Cecil Kellaway, Kenneth Tobey, Donald Woods and Lee Van Cleef.

The film is a drama, horror and science fiction picture that took in about 5 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 208 votes, while film critics gave it 6.7 out of 10 across 22 reviews, placing the two measures close together.
