The Thing from Another World
Short description
A US Air Force crew is sent to a remote Arctic research station after the scientists there report an object falling from the sky and their instruments behaving strangely. At the crash site the men find a large circular craft buried in the ice. When they try to free it with explosives, the vessel is destroyed, but a body frozen inside a block of ice survives and is carried back to the station. The scientists want to study the find, while the military officer in charge wants it left alone until he receives orders. The creature thaws out, and the isolated group is soon fighting for its life against something that does not respond to ordinary force.
Howard Hawks served as producer and directed this 1951 science fiction horror film, the eleventh of the nineteen features he directed in chronological order, following Red River and preceding Monkey Business. Christian Nyby is also credited as director, and Charles Lederer wrote the screenplay with Hawks and Ben Hecht. Kenneth Tobey plays Captain Patrick Hendry, with Margaret Sheridan as Nikki, Robert Cornthwaite as Dr. Arthur Carrington and Douglas Spencer as reporter Ned Scott among a credited cast of twenty-one.
Made by RKO Radio Pictures and Winchester Pictures Corporation on a budget of about one million dollars, the film returned roughly twice that amount at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from more than thirty-two thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller number of votes, and a critics' rating of 7.8 from sixty-eight reviews places it somewhat higher than both audience scores.

- In one of the dialogues, the characters in the film mention another Howard Hawks film, "Sergeant York" (1941).
- Although Christian Nyby was credited as director, it is widely believed that the true creator of the film was its producer, the legendary Howard Hawks, who was reluctant to associate his name with the "low" genre of science fiction, as it was considered at the time.
- The film is based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s story "Who Goes There?" (1938).
