Nazarín

Nazarín is a Mexican drama set in the early twentieth century, during the rule of Porfirio Díaz. Father Nazario is a Catholic priest who lives in poverty among the poor of his community and gives away nearly everything he has. When he shelters a woman accused of killing a fellow prostitute, he is blamed for the trouble that follows and forced to leave. He sets out on foot through the Mexican countryside, joined by two women, one of them the fugitive he protected. His attempts to live by Christian charity bring him into conflict with the people and authorities he encounters.

Luis Buñuel directed the film, the sixth of the fifteen features listed for him, between The River and Death and The Young One. It is an adaptation of a novel by Benito Pérez Galdós, with a screenplay by Julio Alejandro, Buñuel and Emilio Carballido, produced by Manuel Barbachano Ponce. Francisco Rabal plays Father Nazario, alongside Marga López and Rita Macedo as the two women, with Ofelia Guilmáin and Ignacio López Tarso among a credited cast of forty-one.

Released in 1959, the film runs 95 minutes. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 8.3 out of 10 from 14 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 163 votes.
