Short description

A con artist masquerades as Russian nobility and attempts to seduce the wife of an American diplomat.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the USSR, this film was released under the title "Offspring of a Noble Line."
  • It is known that Stroheim ordered the printing of prop French money. Unfortunately, the banknotes turned out to be so realistic that Stroheim was arrested for counterfeiting and had to appear in court on July 14, 1920. He stated that the money was intended solely for use in the motion picture, and he was eventually released.
  • As the film's production costs continued to climb, Universal, in an attempt to turn the losses to its advantage, installed an electric scoreboard on Broadway that showed every week how much had already been spent on the movie.
