The Satanic Rites of Dracula is a British horror film set in 1970s London. Scotland Yard's Inspector Murray investigates a series of strange deaths and concludes he is dealing with vampirism, so he seeks help from Professor Lorrimer Van Helsing, a scholar of the occult and descendant of the famous vampire hunter. Their inquiries lead to a country house where satanic rituals are being held, attended by prominent members of British society, including a government minister and a scientist. Behind it all stands the mysterious property tycoon D. D. Denham, who is in fact Count Dracula, pursuing a scheme that threatens the whole of London. Van Helsing must confront his old enemy once again.
The film was directed by Alan Gibson, its screenplay was written by Don Houghton, and it was produced by Roy Skeggs for Hammer Film Productions. It followed Gibson's Dracula A.D. 1972, released the previous year. Christopher Lee plays Count Dracula opposite Peter Cushing as Van Helsing, with Michael Coles as Inspector Murray, William Franklyn as Peter Torrence, Freddie Jones as Professor Julian Keeley and Joanna Lumley as Jessica Van Helsing. The credited cast numbers 21.
Released in April 1973 and running 88 minutes, the film received modest audience ratings: 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 7,800 votes and 5.6 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 175 votes. Those figures point to a mixed response rather than a strong one, and the relatively small number of votes suggests a modest afterlife among viewers.
