Lady Chatterley's Lover

Constance Chatterley is married to Sir Clifford, an English landowner left paralysed from the waist down by his war service. Unable to share a physical life with his young wife, Clifford encourages her to take a lover within their own social circle. Constance instead becomes involved with Oliver Mellors, the gamekeeper on the estate, and their affair crosses the class divide her husband had tried to preserve. The film adapts D. H. Lawrence's novel, moving the story to post-First World War England.

Just Jaeckin directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Marc Behm and Christopher Wicking. It was the fifth of the six features he directed, arriving between Private Collections in 1979 and Gwendoline in 1984, and it followed the earlier erotic dramas that established his name. Sylvia Kristel, who had starred in Emmanuelle for the same director, plays Lady Constance, with Shane Briant as Clifford, Nicholas Clay as Mellors, Ann Mitchell as Ivy Bolton, Elizabeth Spriggs as Lady Eva and Pascale Rivault as Hilda. The production was a German, British and French co-finance mounted on a budget of about three million dollars, and it returned roughly the same amount at the worldwide box office.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.2 from around 3,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.4 from roughly 94 votes. Both figures point to a modest reception from viewers rather than sustained enthusiasm.
