A British psychiatrist discovers that his wife is having an affair. Driven by jealousy and a desire for revenge, he kidnaps the man and holds him prisoner in a secluded room. He plans to commit the perfect crime by killing his rival and dissolving the body in a bathtub filled with sulfuric acid. As he uses psychological manipulation to break the man, the psychiatrist's control over the situation begins to fail while his wife grows suspicious.
Directed by Edward Dmytryk, this crime thriller was released in 1949. It is the fourth of 18 films directed by Dmytryk, following Back to Bataan and preceding The Sniper. The movie was produced by Nat A. Bronstein and written by Alec Coppel. The cast features Robert Newton as Dr. Clive Riordan, Phil Brown as Bill Kronin, and Sally Gray as Storm Riordan, with supporting roles played by Naunton Wayne, James Harcourt, and Betty Cooper.
The film was produced in the United Kingdom by the J. Arthur Rank Organisation and Independent Sovereign Films. It has been received positively by viewers, earning a rating of 7.3/10 on IMDb from 3,400 votes and a rating of 6.8/10 on TMDB from 56 votes.
