Road House
Short description
Ex-UFC fighter Dalton is struggling to get by, living out of his car and earning money in underground fights. He is hired as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys by the woman who owns it, hoping he can put a stop to the violence that a local gang keeps bringing to the bar. Dalton soon finds that the island is not the peaceful place it appears to be, and his new job pulls him into a conflict with the criminals who want the roadhouse for themselves. The film is a remake of the 1989 movie of the same name.
Doug Liman directed the film, the twelfth of the fourteen features he has made in chronological order, following Locked Down and preceding The Instigators. The screenplay is by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, and Joel Silver produced. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, with Conor McGregor as Knox, Billy Magnussen as Ben Brandt, Travis Van Winkle as Dex, Darren Barnet as Sam and Daniela Melchior as Ellie. The production involved 54 credited cast members and 228 credited crew members, and it cost about 85 million dollars to make.
The film was released in March 2024 and runs 121 minutes. It is an action drama with thriller elements, made in the United States by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Silver Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from around 183,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 from roughly 3,200 votes. A critics' rating of 5.6 from 208 reviews puts the professional response below the scores given by audiences.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming, Jake Gyllenhaal cut himself on glass and subsequently treated a staphylococcal infection.
- The bar’s design was conceived by artist Greg Berry, after which it was built from scratch. The construction proved so robust and high-quality that it withstood even Hurricane Fiona, which struck the Dominican Republic in September 2022 while filming was taking place there.
- Each fight scene in the film features digitally created stunt doubles for the actors, shown in just a few frames.
- Work on the project began in 2013, when Rob Cohen was initially slated to direct the film.
- Some scenes of the film were shot during "UFC 285", a mixed martial arts tournament in Las Vegas on March 4, 2023.
- Preparing to film the role of a former "UFC" fighter, Jake Gyllenhaal actively trained with Jason Walsh.
