The Giant Claw

The Giant Claw is a 1957 American science fiction and horror film about an enormous winged creature that appears in the skies and attacks aircraft. Mitch MacAfee, an electronics engineer testing a new radar system for the military, is flying when he encounters an unidentified object. His report is dismissed, but when planes begin disappearing and other sightings pile up, the authorities are forced to take the threat seriously. Together with mathematician Sally Caldwell, Mitch becomes caught up in the effort to understand and stop the bird, which proves resistant to conventional weapons.

Fred F. Sears directed the film, which sits between Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and Calypso Heat Wave in his filmography. Sam Katzman produced, and Samuel Newman and Paul Gangelin wrote the screenplay. Jeff Morrow stars as Mitch, with Mara Corday as Sally, Morris Ankrum as Lt. Gen. Edward Considine, and Edgar Barrier as Dr. Karol Noymann. Twenty cast members are credited. Columbia Pictures and Clover Productions released the 74-minute film on June 1, 1957.

Reception has been modest: on IMDb it holds a rating of 4.6 from around 5,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 4.8 from roughly 95 votes.
