The Underneath

Michael Chambers returns to his Texas hometown after years away, drawn back for his mother's wedding. He left behind debts and a relationship with Rachel, and he now hopes to rebuild both his life and his connection with her. Rachel has moved on and is involved with Tommy Dundee, a nightclub owner whose protection comes at a cost. Michael takes a job as an armored-car guard alongside his mother's new husband, but his old gambling habits and the pull of the past draw him toward a criminal scheme involving the very people closest to him.

Steven Soderbergh directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Fuchs. The film is the third of 35 features he has directed, following Kafka and preceding Out of Sight. Peter Gallagher plays Michael, with Alison Elliott as Rachel, William Fichtner as Tommy Dundee, Adam Trese as his brother David, and Joe Don Baker and Paul Dooley in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 7 million dollars.

On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 26 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 93 votes. The two scores sit close together, indicating a mixed but not sharply divided response.
