Cyclo is a crime drama set in present-day Ho Chi Minh City. A teenage cyclo driver supports his two sisters and his grandfather by pedalling passengers through the streets, and when his rented vehicle is taken from him, he is drawn into the service of the woman who owns the fleet, a figure who directs him toward criminal work. He comes under the watch of a man known as the Poet, and the film follows his movement into a life of easy money and violence.
Tran Anh Hung wrote and directed the film, which followed his 1993 debut The Scent of Green Papaya in his filmography. Le Van Loc plays the title role, with Tony Leung Chiu-wai as the Poet, Nhu Quynh as the Madam, and Hoang Phuc as Tooth. Christophe Rossignon produced the film, a co-production between Vietnam, Hong Kong and France.
The film holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB, with the critics' rating also at 7.1 out of 10 from a small set of reviews. The audience scores sit close to that critical figure. Cyclo won the Golden Lion for best film at the 52nd Venice International Film Festival.
