Harry Fabian is a New York lawyer whose schemes have never paid off, and he sees a way out by becoming a boxing promoter. To raise the money he needs, he turns to Helen, the wife of bar owner Phil Nasseros and Harry's lover. The plan puts him in the path of Ira "Boom Boom" Grossman, the established power in the fight business, and the people around it are far more dangerous than Harry expects.
Night and the City is a 1992 crime drama directed by Irwin Winkler, his second film after Guilty by Suspicion. Richard Price wrote the screenplay, and Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange lead a cast that also includes Cliff Gorman, Alan King, Jack Warden and Eli Wallach. It was produced by 20th Century Fox, Tribeca Productions and Penta Film.
The production had a budget of about 20 million US dollars and took roughly 6 million worldwide, a poor return. Audiences are divided on it: on IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from about 5,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.7/10 from 82 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.5/10 from 14 reviews is close to the audience scores, leaving little sign of a strong critical or popular following.
