Light Sleeper

John LeTour is a former addict who has spent years delivering drugs to wealthy clients in New York. Now middle-aged, he wants out of the trade, but the work keeps pulling him back. His employer, Ann, is preparing to close the business and move into cosmetics, and the death of a longtime customer draws police attention at the same time. When John runs into Marianne, a woman he once shared years of addiction with, he sees a chance to leave his old life behind. She claims to be clean too, though her situation is more fragile than she admits.

Paul Schrader wrote and directed the film, his eighth of twenty-two features, following Patty Hearst and preceding Witch Hunt. Willem Dafoe plays John, with Susan Sarandon as Ann and Dana Delany as Marianne; David Clennon, Mary Beth Hurt and Victor Garber appear among a credited cast of twenty-eight. Made for about five million dollars, the film returned roughly one million at the worldwide box office.

On IMDb it holds 6.9 from 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from 227. A critics' rating of 7.5 from 45 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
