Saturday Night and Sunday Morning

Arthur Seaton is a young factory worker in an industrial town in the English Midlands. He spends his weeks at his machine and his weekends drinking, fighting and seeing two women at once: Brenda, the wife of a workmate, and the younger Doreen, who expects a serious commitment before she will go further with him. Arthur's appetite for pleasure collides with the claims both women make on him, and his defiance of employers and authority runs up against the limits of the life around him.

Karel Reisz directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Alan Sillitoe, with Tony Richardson producing. Albert Finney plays Arthur, and the cast includes Shirley Anne Field as Doreen, Rachel Roberts as Brenda, Hylda Baker as Aunt Ada, Norman Rossington as Bert and Bryan Pringle as Jack. It runs 90 minutes.

Released in October 1960, the film drew an 8.1 rating from 15 critics' reviews, higher than its audience scores of 7.5 on IMDb from around 10,000 votes and 7 on TMDB from a much smaller number. Reisz went on to direct Isadora, The Gambler, Who'll Stop the Rain, The French Lieutenant's Woman and Sweet Dreams.
