Neo Tokyo is an anthology film featuring three distinct stories. The first follows a young girl and her cat as they enter a strange, hallucinatory world through a mirror. The second centers on a champion racer in a futuristic and deadly competition who faces a difficult final race. The third involves a man sent to a remote location to stop an automated construction project that has spiraled out of control.
The project was a collaboration between three directors: Rintaro, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and Katsuhiro Otomo, who each wrote and directed their respective segments. For Otomo, this 1989 release followed his 1988 film Akira. It appeared in the middle of Rintaro's career, following six earlier films and preceding two others. For Kawajiri, it followed three previous works and preceded eight others. The voice cast includes Hideko Yoshida, Banjo Ginga, and Masane Tsukayama.
Produced by Madhouse and other companies, this Japanese animation blends science fiction, fantasy, and adventure. The film has a runtime of 50 minutes. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 6.7/10 based on 132 votes.
