Eddie Keller, a Vietnam veteran played by Richard Pryor, comes home after years in a prisoner of war camp. He is welcomed as a hero, but the attention fades fast, and he finds that his old life has fallen apart: his wife has moved on, his money is gone, and the army is withholding his pay. Toni Donovan, a sex worker played by Margot Kidder, is one of the few people who stands by him. With no legitimate way to get back on his feet, Eddie turns to crime.
Some Kind of Hero was released in 1982. It was directed by Michael Pressman, following his 1980 feature Those Lips, Those Eyes, and written by Robert Boris and James Kirkwood Jr. Howard W. Koch produced. The cast includes Ray Sharkey, Ronny Cox, Lynne Moody and Olivia Cole, with thirty credited performers in all. The film mixes comedy and drama and runs 97 minutes.
Made for a budget of 8 million dollars, the film took in 24 million worldwide, a return that indicates a solid commercial performance. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 1,900 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.6 from a much smaller number of votes. Both figures point to a middling response from viewers rather than enthusiasm, with the two audiences broadly in agreement.
