Looking for Mr. Goodbar

Looking for Mr. Goodbar follows Theresa Dunn, a schoolteacher who works with deaf children and lives a quiet, respectable life by day. After a brief affair with a married colleague leaves her unfulfilled, she moves out of her family home and begins spending her nights in singles' bars, searching for a connection she cannot quite name. There she drifts into a series of casual and increasingly risky encounters, including a relationship with a man whose aggression draws her in even as it frightens her. The film sets her daytime devotion to her students against a nighttime world of bars and impersonal sex, tracing how the two halves of her life pull against each other.

Richard Brooks directed and wrote the screenplay, and Freddie Fields produced. It arrived in 1977, between Bite the Bullet and Wrong Is Right, and is the tenth of the eleven features Brooks directed listed here. Diane Keaton stars as Theresa, with Tuesday Weld, William Atherton, Richard Kiley, Richard Gere and Alan Feinstein among the 36 credited cast members.
