The Second Tragic Fantozzi continues the misadventures of Ugo Fantozzi, a meek, bowler-hatted accountant at a large company who spends his days absorbing the whims and demands of his superiors while his home life offers little relief. Built from a series of comic episodes rather than a single storyline, the film follows him through a lottery win that lets him accompany his boss to Monte Carlo, a hunting outing, a company ship launch, a dinner with a countess in an old castle, and a weekly screening and discussion of a classic Soviet film.
Luciano Salce directed, following the first Fantozzi film from 1975 and placing this second entry early in a run that includes Crazy Desire, High Infidelity, The Queens, Medicine Italian Style, and Vieni avanti cretino. Paolo Villaggio plays Fantozzi and co-wrote the screenplay with Leonardo Benvenuti and Piero De Bernardi; Andrea Rizzoli produced. Anna Mazzamauro, Gigi Reder, Ugo Bologna, Mauro Vestri and Plinio Fernando are among the 82 credited cast members.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 638 votes, a consistently strong score that reflects its standing among Italian screen comedies of the period.
