A Silent Voice: The Movie

Shouya Ishida bullies Shouko Nishimiya, a deaf classmate who has just transferred into his elementary school. He and a group of friends target her because of her hearing loss, and the harassment continues until Shouko leaves the school. The class then turns against Shouya, blaming him for what happened, and he finds himself isolated in the same way he once treated her. Years later, still carrying the weight of his past actions, Shouya seeks Shouko out, hoping to make amends, though the two have not spoken since childhood.

The film is an adaptation of Yoshitoki Oima's manga, directed by Naoko Yamada at Kyoto Animation. It came after her earlier features, K-ON! The Movie and Tamako Love Story, and before Liz and the Blue Bird. Reiko Yoshida wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Miyu Irino as Shouya, Saori Hayami as Shouko, Aoi Yuki as Shouko's sister Yuzuru, Kensho Ono, Yuki Kaneko and Yui Ishikawa. The production drew on a credited crew of 162 people and 21 credited cast members.

Released in Japan in September 2016, the film took about 30 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from roughly 139,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.4 out of 10 from around 4,700 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 37 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores, which remain notably high across a large number of viewers.
