The film is based on Stephen Leather's book "The Chinaman", published in 1992.
Nick Cassavetes was offered the position of director for the film.
The character played by Pierce Brosnan was modeled after Irish politicians Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness (1950-2017). Adams was an activist in the Irish Republican Army movement, although he denied membership in the IRA (while many others confirmed his affiliation). He served as chairman of Sinn Féin, the political wing of the IRA, and played a significant role in the peaceful resolution of the armed conflict in Northern Ireland.
In February 2016, during the filming of an episode involving an explosion on a double-decker bus on Lambeth Bridge, London police received two calls about a terrorist act from concerned passersby.
