Permanent Vacation

Permanent Vacation follows Allie Parker, a young man drifting through downtown Manhattan over roughly two and a half days. With his father absent and his mother in an institution, Allie wanders the streets without a clear destination, crossing paths with a series of eccentric strangers. A devoted fan of the jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, whose name he shares, he moves through the city in a loose search for meaning, passing through graffiti-covered corners and encounters that give shape to his rootless existence.

The film was written, produced and directed by Jim Jarmusch as his first feature. Made independently through his own Cinesthesia Productions, it runs 75 minutes and marked the beginning of a career that continued with Stranger Than Paradise in 1984, the second of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order. Chris Parker plays Allie, with Leila Gastil, John Lurie, Richard Boes, Sara Driver and Charlie Spademan in supporting roles.

Released in March 1981, the film holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes, and 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 223 votes. The gap in vote counts indicates a modest but lasting reputation among a wider audience, with a smaller, more dedicated group logging it on TMDB.
