Short description
Split is a psychological horror thriller about Kevin Wendell Crumb, a man living with dissociative identity disorder. Twenty-three distinct personalities have surfaced during his sessions with his psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher, but another presence has been waiting beneath them, intent on taking control. Kevin abducts three teenage girls, including the watchful Casey Cooke, and holds them captive while the personalities within him struggle for dominance and the barriers between them begin to break down.
James McAvoy plays Kevin and several of his alternate identities, with Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey, Haley Lu Richardson as Claire, Jessica Sula as Marcia and Betty Buckley as Dr. Fletcher. M. Night Shyamalan wrote, directed and produced the film, his tenth feature in chronological order, following The Visit and preceding Glass. It was made for roughly 9 million dollars and released in January 2017.
The film became a major commercial success, earning about 278 million dollars worldwide, a return far out of proportion to its modest budget. Audiences responded positively: it holds a rating of 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb from over 618,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from more than 18,000 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 313 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores. The cast includes 50 credited performers and 87 credited crew members.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is the first time since the release of "Stir of Echoes" (1998) that James Newton Howard has not been the composer for an M. Night Shyamalan film.
- Director M. Night Shyamalan appeared in a cameo role as a security guard at Dr. Fletcher’s (Betty Buckley) house.
- For a number of reasons, the filmmakers failed to secure a contract with Joaquin Phoenix, and as a result, James McAvoy got his role.
- At the premiere of "Split" during the annual American Film Institute film festival, Betty Buckley, who played Dr. Fletcher, introduced herself as "that crazy lady from "The Happening". She was referring to M. Night Shyamalan's 2008 science fiction thriller.
- Bruce Willis appeared in a cameo role in the film. He played the same character he played in M. Night Shyamalan's "Unbreakable" (2000).
- Initially, Shyamalan did not envision Kevin being shaved bald. James McAvoy shaved his head for filming in “X-Men: Apocalypse” and came to Shyamalan's attention while he was having drinks with friends at a bar. Shyamalan, describing McAvoy at the time as a “drunk skinhead,” decided that this look was perfect for Kevin.
- During filming, James McAvoy broke his arm. He decided not to tell anyone and continued filming for another two days after the incident, only then going to the hospital.
- Upon its release, this film became the longest (117 minutes) in the career of director M. Night Shyamalan.
- In one scene, Hedwig (James McAvoy) tells Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) that he adores Kanye West. West mentioned M. Night Shyamalan's previous film "Unbreakable" (2000) in his song Through the Wire.
- This is the second joint project for director M. Night Shyamalan and producer Jason Blum. The previous one was the film "The Visit" (2015).
