Short description
Fast X continues the story of Dominic Toretto and his crew, who have spent years outmaneuvering opponents far more powerful than themselves. Their latest adversary, Dante Reyes, has spent a long time planning his revenge, which stems from the fate of his father, the drug lord Hernan Reyes, whose criminal empire was destroyed by Dom's team in Rio de Janeiro. Dante's campaign is aimed at tearing the family apart and taking from Dom everything he cares about, forcing him to protect the people closest to him while deciding whom he can save.
Louis Leterrier directed the film, the tenth entry in the series and his first in that franchise. He came to it after directing The Transporter, Unleashed, Transporter 2, The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans, Now You See Me, Grimsby and The Takedown. The screenplay was written by Justin Lin and Dan Mazeau, with Vin Diesel, Neal H. Moritz and Jeff Kirschenbaum producing. Vin Diesel returns as Dominic Toretto alongside Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, John Cena and Nathalie Emmanuel, among a credited cast of 41.
Released in May 2023, the film cost about 340 million dollars and grossed roughly 705 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from about 145,000 votes and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from around 6,500 votes. The critics' score of 5.7 from 315 reviews sits in line with the IMDb figure and below the TMDB audience rating.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one of the scenes during the credits, Dwayne Johnson appeared on screen as Hobbs. This surprised viewers and critics, as Johnson had insisted for many years that the eighth film in the franchise would be Hobbs' last – due to the ongoing feud with Vin Diesel, which flared up during the filming of "The Fate of the Furious" (2017), which also starred Tyrese Gibson. In 2019, relations between the actors seemed to thaw somewhat when Johnson publicly expressed gratitude to Diesel for his support of the action film "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" (David Leitch, 2019), but as of November 2021, he was still firmly determined not to return to the franchise. After the release of "Fast X" in 2023, its director Louis Leterrier stated in an interview that after completing work on the film, Johnson was sent an invitation to a screening in the hope that he would return in subsequent films in the franchise. Fortunately, Johnson liked the film and agreed to a cameo mid-credits. Subsequently, the actor released a statement saying that he had reconciled with Diesel as early as summer 2022 and had signed on to film a separate film about Hobbs, which will tie together the plotlines of "Fast X" and "Fast XI".
- The fight scene between Michelle Rodriguez and Charlize Theron was filmed independently, without the director's presence.
