Early Man centres on Dug, a caveman who lives with his tribe in a secluded valley alongside his boar companion Hognob. Their stone-age way of life is disrupted when invaders from the Bronze Age arrive to take the valley for its resources, led by the arrogant Lord Nooth. To win back their home, Dug and his fellow tribespeople must take on the Bronze Age visitors in a sport they have never played, a game sacred to their rivals and mastered by them long before.
The film was directed by Nick Park, following a run of work that includes A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave, Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and A Matter of Loaf and Death. Mark Burton and James Higginson wrote the screenplay, and Park produced with Richard Beek and Peter Lord for Aardman, with StudioCanal, Summit Entertainment and the BFI among the production companies. Eddie Redmayne voices Dug, Tom Hiddleston voices Lord Nooth, Maisie Williams voices Goona, and Timothy Spall, Miriam Margolyes and Rob Brydon are also in the voice cast.
Released in January 2018 and running 89 minutes, the film had a budget of 50 million USD and took about 53 million USD worldwide, a modest return. It holds a 6.1 rating on IMDb from around 25,000 votes and a 6.1 on TMDB from roughly 895 votes; the critics' rating stands slightly higher, at 6.6 from 173 reviews.
