Lady with the Dog is a Soviet drama adapted from Anton Chekhov's short story. While on holiday in Yalta, Moscow banker Dmitri Gurov notices a young woman walking her dog along the promenade. She is Anna Sergeyevna, unhappily married, and he is likewise discontent in his own marriage. Away from their spouses, the two begin an affair. When the holiday ends, Anna returns to Saratov and Gurov to Moscow, but what began as a casual romance proves harder to leave behind than either expected.
Iosif Kheifits directed and wrote the screenplay, his third feature after The Rumyantsev Case and The Fires of Baku, and he would go on to make In the Town of S. The leads are Iya Savvina as Anna and Aleksey Batalov as Gurov, with Nina Alisova, Pantelejmon Krymov, Yuri Medvedev and Pavel Pervushin in supporting roles. The film runs 83 minutes and was produced by Lenfilm.
Released in January 1960, the film holds a rating of 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 1,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from roughly 30 votes. The larger and more established IMDb sample points to a generally favourable response, whereas the much smaller TMDB group rates it considerably lower.
