Jonah Hill based his portrayal on Cyrus Benz Brank.
Although the film had an approved script, the directors encouraged the actors to improvise as much as possible.
In the scene where Cyrus argues with his mother, he is clean-shaven, but after he runs out of the house and looks in the window, a beard is visible on his face.
When Cyrus and his mother are in his room, she looks at photographs, and the Alienware company logo is visible on an Apple Macbook laptop, which is impossible as they are different manufacturers.
The U-Haul van has a license plate from another vehicle. Since the late 1990s, U-Haul trucks have had Arizona license plates because the company's headquarters is in Phoenix, Arizona.
