Seven years after his divorce, John remains single and has largely given up on romance. At the urging of his ex-wife Jamie, who has become his closest friend, he reluctantly attends a party with her and her partner Tim. There he meets Molly, and the two quickly begin a relationship. John soon senses that something is holding her back, and he learns that another man is central to her life: her twenty-one-year-old son Cyrus, whom she has raised alone and to whom she is unusually close. Cyrus has no wish to share his mother, and the two men begin competing for her attention.
Jay Duplass directed, and he and Mark Duplass wrote the screenplay. It was the second feature the brothers directed together, following Baghead in 2008, and it came before Jeff, Who Lives at Home in 2012; Jay Duplass has since directed The Baltimorons and See You When I See You. John C. Reilly stars as John, with Jonah Hill as Cyrus, Marisa Tomei as Molly, Catherine Keener as Jamie and Matt Walsh as Tim.
Made for about seven million dollars, the film took roughly ten million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.3 from around 37,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.9 from 475 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 155 reviews places it noticeably above the audience scores.
