Short description
An ambitious New York socialite plans an extravagant dinner party as her businessman husband, Oliver, contends with financial woes, causing a lot of tension between the couple. Meanwhile, their high-society friends and associates, including the gruff Dan Packard and his sultry spouse, Kitty, contend with their own entanglements, leading to revelations at the much-anticipated dinner.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Carlotta's dog was named Mussolini, but due to the political events of the 1930s, the name was redubbed to 'Tarzan.' Nevertheless, by looking at the lips of actress Marie Dressler (1868-1934), who played the role of Carlotta, one can clearly read 'Mussolini.'
- Filming took 27 days. Director George Cukor (1899-1983) once stated that this was the amount of time he was typically allotted to film each movie.
- Jean Harlow (1911-1937) got along wonderfully with everyone in the cast during filming, except for Wallace Beery (1885-1949). They had previously worked together in George W. Hill's (1895-1934) crime drama 'The Secret Six' (1931), where they took a dislike to one another, and they carried this mutual animosity onto the set of 'Dinner at Eight'. Beery viewed Harlow as an inexperienced girl and was openly rude to her. Harlow considered him an unrefined boor. In the film, they played a husband and wife who couldn't stand each other, which, in general, was not difficult.
