Nelly is married to André, a successful advertising man with whom she leads a comfortable but uneventful life. At a dance, she meets Loulou, a long-haired, unemployed petty criminal, and is drawn to his rudeness, his sexual confidence and his apparent freedom. She begins an affair and, when André throws her out, moves in with Loulou, ready to share his life and his small hustles.
Loulou promises to work for her sake and for the child she is expecting, but a Sunday meal with his unruly family forces Nelly to confront what marriage to him would actually mean. Her decision about the pregnancy drives the couple apart.
Directed by Maurice Pialat, Loulou was his second feature, following Byzance and preceding Van Gogh, and he wrote the screenplay with Arlette Langmann. Isabelle Huppert plays Nelly, Gérard Depardieu plays Loulou, and Guy Marchand plays André. The film runs 106 minutes.
On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from eight reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 113 votes, a wider and noticeably cooler audience response than that of the reviewers.
