Shout at the Devil

Shout at the Devil is set in East Africa during the years surrounding the First World War, where an Irish-American ivory poacher named Flynn O'Flynn pursues his trade in German colonial territory. He takes on a well-bred Englishman, Sebastian Oldsmith, as a partner, and their operations bring them into conflict with the local German commissioner, Fleischer. The feud between the two sides grows steadily more personal and violent, and it eventually draws in Rosa, O'Flynn's daughter, who marries Sebastian. The film builds toward an attempt to destroy a German warship taking refuge in an inlet off the coast. It is based on a novel by Wilbur Smith, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alastair Reid and Stanley Price, and the story draws loosely on the wartime fate of a German light cruiser.

Peter R. Hunt directed, following On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Gold; Rough Cut, Death Hunt and Assassination came later. Lee Marvin plays O'Flynn, Roger Moore plays Sebastian and Barbara Parkins plays Rosa, with Ian Holm as Mohammed and Reinhard Kolldehoff as Fleischer among a credited cast of 27. The production, made in the United Kingdom by Tonav Productions with Michael Klinger producing, carried a budget of about 10 million dollars and runs 147 minutes.
