Short description

Set about a year after Godzilla was driven off by the robotic defender Kiryu, the film follows Japan's efforts to repair the machine, which is built around the bones of the original Godzilla. The twin fairies of Infant Island bring a warning: the remains must be returned to the sea, or Mothra will not stand with humanity if Godzilla returns. Officials press ahead with the repairs, and the warning proves well founded when Godzilla rises again and Mothra arrives to fight him.

Masaaki Tezuka directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Masahiro Yokotani, following his earlier Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla. The cast includes Noboru Kaneko as Yoshito Chûjô, Miho Yoshioka as pilot Azusa Kisaragi, Mitzuki Koga as operator Kyôsuke Akiba, and Hiroshi Koizumi as Dr. Shin'ichi Chûjô, alongside Tsutomu Kitagawa as Godzilla and Motokuni Nakagawa as Kiryu.

Released in Japan in December 2003, the film runs 91 minutes and combines action, adventure, fantasy and science fiction. It took about 12 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a 7.2 rating from roughly 215 votes, indicating a modest but appreciative audience for a series entry built on monsters and machines.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Kiryu, newly restored and destroyed again, is a reference to "Terror of Mechagodzilla" (1975).
  • This is the last film to feature Mechagodzilla (Kiryu). He can also be seen in the opening credits of the subsequent film "Godzilla: Final Wars" (2004).
  • This is the twenty-seventh Godzilla film, the twelfth Mothra film, the fifth Mechagodzilla (Kiryu) film, and the second film featuring Kamabas, as well as the only film in the Millennium series of Godzilla films whose plot is connected to another film in the Millennium series.
  • The two Mothra larvae in one egg are borrowed from the film "Godzilla vs. Mothra" (1964).
