KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park follows the rock band KISS at a California amusement park, where a disgruntled scientist named Abner Devereaux is developing technology that turns people into robotic duplicates. The park's management has put its money into hosting the band rather than into his inventions. He responds by building robot versions of the four musicians, planning to use the concert for his own ends. When people close to the park begin to disappear, KISS must draw on abilities beyond their stage act to stop him. The film blends horror, music and science fiction.
Gordon Hessler directed the 96-minute television movie, which aired on October 28, 1978. It was his third feature, following Scream and Scream Again in 1970 and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad in 1973, and it came from Hanna-Barbera Productions and Aucoin Productions on a budget of 3 million dollars. Jan Michael Sherman and Don Buday wrote the screenplay, Terry Morse Jr. produced, and the credited cast numbers 26. Peter Criss, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley appear as the band's stage personas, with Anthony Zerbe as Devereaux and Carmine Caridi as Calvin Richards.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 4.6 out of 10 from around 3,700 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from 85 votes. The larger IMDb sample suggests the film is remembered as a curiosity tied to the band's popularity rather than as a widely admired production.
