Short description
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation takes the monster family away from the hotel for the first time. Overworked from running the resort for so long, Dracula is surprised by his family with a holiday aboard a luxury cruise ship built for monsters. He soon falls for Ericka, the ship's captain, and she seems to return his interest. What he does not realise, and what his daughter Mavis grows suspicious of, is that Ericka has a connection to the Van Helsing family of monster hunters, putting everyone on board at risk.
The film is directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, his fourth feature in chronological order and his third entry in this series after Hotel Transylvania in 2012 and Hotel Transylvania 2 in 2015. He wrote the screenplay with Michael McCullers, and Michelle Murdocca produced it for Sony Pictures Animation, Columbia Pictures and MRC. The voice cast includes Adam Sandler as Dracula and Kathryn Hahn as Ericka, alongside Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James and Jim Gaffigan.
It cost about 80 million dollars and returned roughly 529 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for an animated family release. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from about 99,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 4,800 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 119 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Over 5,700 portholes were created for the ship.
- The advertisement celebrating the birthday on the cruise liner lists the names of the film crew.
- This is the last work of animator Bud Luckey. He passed away on February 24, 2018, while work on the film was underway. The film is dedicated to his memory.
- The scene where Johnny sees the gremlin on the plane's wing is a reference to the episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" from the classic television series "The Twilight Zone" (1959-1964).
- The character of Crystal was inspired by Kitty from A. Edward Sutherland's science fiction film "The Invisible Woman" (1940).
- Aaron LaPlante is the only actor in the project who voiced over a dozen characters.
- The chupacabra is an unknown creature to science, a character from urban legends. The urban legend originated in the 1950s when several dead goats were found in Puerto Rico, allegedly drained of their blood. That's why in the film, the bartender serves the chupacabra a goat in a glass when it asks for a drink.
- To enhance visual realism, the special effects artists created the ships in the “Bermuda Triangle” individually.
