Short description

SpongeBob SquarePants is devastated when his pet snail Gary is taken from him, so he sets out with his friend Patrick Star on a journey far beyond Bikini Bottom to bring Gary home. The rescue mission leads the pair to Atlantic City, where they face a series of obstacles while learning how much their friendship matters. The film is an animated family adventure that continues the world of the long-running television series.

Tim Hill wrote and directed the film, which sits seventh in his directing career, after Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever in 2014 and before The War with Grandpa in 2020. Tom Kenny voices both SpongeBob and Gary, with Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Mr. Lawrence as Plankton and Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs; Keanu Reeves appears as Sage. Production involved Paramount, MRC, Nickelodeon Movies and United Plankton Pictures across Canada, the United States and France. The film cost about 60 million dollars to make and returned roughly 5 million dollars worldwide, a wide gap between its production cost and its theatrical earnings.

On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 25,000 votes, while on TMDB it rates 7.4 out of 10 from over 3,000 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, the film was intended to be released for the 20th anniversary of the start of the 'SpongeBob SquarePants' animated series, but the premiere was moved to 2020 due to the upcoming 2019 release of the adventure film 'Dora and the Lost City of Gold' (James Bobin).
  • The official origin story of the main character.
  • Dedicated to the memory of Stephen Hillenburg, creator of SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • Unlike other elements of the franchise, this is computer animation incorporating live-action elements.
