Set in a mythic Indonesia, The Devil's Sword follows Mandala, a warrior who becomes the protector of a village chief's daughter after she is promised to a crocodile queen. The evil queen, who rules a kingdom of man-eating crocodiles and demands male sacrifices, has her henchmen capture the girl's fiancé. To free him and defeat the queen's forces, Mandala sets out for a map that leads to the Devil's Sword, a weapon hidden in the Cave of the Devil Mountain that grants great power to whoever holds it. He is pursued by four warriors who tortured the map's keeper and by the queen's henchman Banyunjaga.
Ratno Timoer directed this 1984 Indonesian production for Rapi Films, following his 1976 film Poisonous Kiss. Imam Tantowi wrote the screenplay, and Sabirin Kasdani and Gope T. Samtani produced. Barry Prima stars as Mandala, with Sri Gudhi Sintara as the Queen of the White Alligator Women, Advent Bangun as Banyunjaga, Enny Christina as Pitaloka and Kandar Sinyo as Abirawa.
Running 100 minutes and blending action, adventure, fantasy and horror, the film draws modest viewer scores: 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb from 616 votes and 5.1 out of 10 on TMDB from 23 votes. The two audiences broadly agree on its standing.
