Marooned
Short description
Marooned follows three American astronauts who have spent months aboard an orbiting laboratory and are preparing to come home, only to discover that their craft's thrusters will not fire. With the crew stuck in orbit, the head of the space program, Charles Keith, and the veteran astronaut Ted Dougherty work out a rescue plan on the ground. The attempt is made harder by a hurricane bearing down on the launch site and by the dwindling air supply inside the astronauts' capsule.
John Sturges directed the film, the fourteenth of the eighteen features he made, arriving between Ice Station Zebra and Joe Kidd. Mayo Simon wrote the screenplay, and Frank Capra, Jr. and M.J. Frankovich produced it for Columbia Pictures. Gregory Peck plays Keith, with Richard Crenna, David Janssen, James Franciscus and Gene Hackman as the crew and Dougherty, and Lee Grant as Celia Pruett. The film runs 134 minutes.
Critical and audience responses were modest and close together: critics gave it 6.7 out of 10 across seven reviews, while on TMDB it holds 6 out of 10 from 116 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Frank Capra initially began filming, but left the project in May 1966 when he was unable to reduce the budget to $3 million, as demanded by M. J. Frankovich of Columbia Pictures. John Sturges became the film's director, and the production ultimately cost $8 million. Capra never directed another film.
