Lola is a drama set in the French port city of Nantes. Cécile, known by her stage name Lola, works as a dancer and singer in a cabaret and is raising her seven-year-old son alone. The boy's father, Michel, left for the Pacific years earlier to make his fortune, before she knew she was pregnant, and she has been waiting for him ever since. Two other men hover around her: Frankie, an American sailor whose ship is in port, and Roland Cassard, a childhood friend drifting between odd jobs. The film follows these characters as their paths cross, narrowly miss and fail to connect.
Jacques Demy wrote and directed the film, his first feature. It was produced by Carlo Ponti and Georges de Beauregard, and runs 89 minutes. Anouk Aimée plays the title role, with Marc Michel, Jacques Harden, Alan Scott, Élina Labourdette and Margo Lion among the 24 credited cast members. Demy went on to make The Seven Deadly Sins, Bay of Angels and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg in the years that followed.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.4 from around 8,400 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from roughly 300 votes. A critics' score of 8.1 from 20 reviews places it above the audience ratings on both sites.
