Serial

Serial is a 1980 American comedy set in Marin County, north of San Francisco, where a man named Harvey finds himself out of step with the people around him. His wife, his friends and his wealthy neighbors have all taken up one fashionable California trend or another, and Harvey resists the whole current. The strain reaches into his own household: Kate drifts away from their home toward a therapy group, while their daughter Joan becomes involved with a religious sect. Harvey's friends are no help, preoccupied as they are with their own divorces, frustrations and difficult children. When Harvey concludes that Joan is being held against her will by the group, he works out a plan to get her out.

The film was directed by Bill Persky, best known for his television work, from a screenplay by Rich Eustis and Michael Elias, and produced by Sidney Beckerman for Paramount. Martin Mull plays Harvey, with Tuesday Weld as Kate, Jennifer McAllister as Joan, Sam Chew Jr. as Bill, Sally Kellerman as Martha and Anthony Battaglia as Stokeley, among a credited cast of 45. Running 90 minutes, it was released on March 28, 1980, and took in about 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.6 from a much smaller number of votes.
